A vegan trend influencing the cosmetics industry

Vegan cosmetics are growing in popularity around the world. According to estimates, the global market for vegan cosmetics is set to reach $21 billion by 2025, representing 3% of the global beauty market. This trend is being fuelled by brands that are adopting a responsible, ecological marketing approach in line with the values of younger generations who are very concerned about respect for animals and the environment. Growth in this market is strongest in Europe.

What are vegan cosmetics?

By definition, a vegan cosmetic product guarantees the absence of animal raw materials and materials of animal origin such as milk, keratin, collagen or honey. For over 10 years, cosmetics on the European market have not been tested on animals (with the exception of the raw materials they are made from, which may still be tested). However, the vegan trend raises a number of issues linked to the lack of official certification. What guarantees do consumers have when they choose a product labelled “vegan”? Companies make dubious interpretations of the claim, and the minimum commitments required are often not respected. This is where EVE Vegan® certification comes into its own. Our experience has shown that many biases jeopardise the guarantees offered by companies that self-declare their products as vegan, without being checked by a third party.

The EVE Vegan® guarantees for consumers

The EVE Vegan® certification mark requires companies to be totally transparent about the composition of their products. Formulations, raw materials, packaging and accessories are all studied to ensure that they are not of animal origin. EVE Vegan® also carries out an on-site audit to ensure that risks and the quality system are properly managed for maximum long-term protection. The EVE Vegan® certification mark is an essential guarantee for consumers who want to make ethical choices when it comes to cosmetics.

EVE Vegan® Factory Certification, a response to Brand Demand

With the growing popularity of vegan cosmetics, brands are expressing strong demand for ingredient suppliers to obtain vegan certification. To meet these expectations, many ingredient suppliers are adopting the Usine EVE Vegan® certification. This is the case of Sollice Biotech, which Cosmed TV interviews in its video. Céline Fournet, Quality & Regulatory Manager at Sollice Biotech, explains that their factory’s compliance with the EVE Vegan standard is a key factor in getting brands interested in their ingredients.
