Definition of the word vegan

What is veganism?

The term veganism is a derivative of the word "vegan" which results from the syncopation of the English word "vegetarian". Veganism is a practice that aims to combat speciesism in all its forms by opposing discrimination and violence against animals (the exploitation and commodification of animals by the human institution). The term vegan can be used to characterize the way of life of a person or to characterize the qualities of a consumer product.

By animal, we mean all vertebrates and multicellular invertebrates (Example: Mammals, birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, corals.).

Vegan (the individual)

A person who excludes, as far as possible and reasonable in practice, all animal products (veganism) and adopts an animal-friendly lifestyle (clothing, cosmetics, leisure activities, etc.). Adj. The vegan movement, veganism. Animal origin in this practice means raw materials from animal husbandry, slaughter, hunting and fishing.

Vegan (the product)

A product that is free of all substances of animal origin, that has not used technical agents of animal origin and that has not been tested on them in any way. The manufacture of an explicitly vegan product requires the exclusion, as far as possible, of any form of participation in the animal trade for its elaboration.

The motivations behind the growth of veganism

Ethics

The human population is showing an increasing interest in animal welfare and tends to replace animal products with alternatives to be in line with its principles.

Ecology

To adopt a vegan consumption is also to act for the environment and to fight against the climatic emergency, the pollution related to breeding, the intensive agriculture for breeding, the zoonoses and many other problems related to the exploitation of the animals.

Health

The 100% plant-based diet is the healthiest food practice to adopt for your health. It offers many benefits to people suffering from diseases of over-consumption (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases) as well as to anyone wishing to replace their share of animal proteins with plant proteins.
